In India, CHEMFAB ALKALIS LIMITED [CAL] were the FIRST to introduce MEMBRANE CELL TECHNOLOGY in 1985. CAL set up the FIRST MEMBRANECELL CAUSTIC SODA Plant in the Union Territory of Pondicherry and commenced production in 1985.
In the late 70's, in Japan, "MEMBRANE" Cell Technology Caustic Soda Plants were established. MEMBRANE Cell Technology is pollution-free and does not use any harmful materials like Mercury, Asbestos etc.
After seeing the successful performance of CAL, the Government of India took a policy decision that :
"No more Caustic Soda Plant using Mercury Cell will be permitted to expand nor set up.
All future Caustic Soda Plants in the country will use only MEMBRANE Cell Technology".
